Welcome To The Web Site For Humanity

SPRING, 2000

Special Thanks

California Fresh Foods, owned and operated by brothers Andy and Bob Jacobson continues to contribute enough food to serve 200 people each week. The restaurant/catering company located on the second floor of the Northridge Mall donates gourmet foods for the people on the streets such as teriyaki chicken, sausages, mac and cheese, french onion soup and ravioli (just to name a few). The foods are prepared by volunteers Craig Randell and Naoma Nicholls and taken downtown by Ray and ex-Skid Row resident Carlos Johnson. 200 people a week are touched by the Jacobson’s generosity and believe us, they are becoming very famous downtown.

John Zounes generously gave of his time at our Night of Swing to take photos. You might have seen him lurking around with camera in hand. Without him, the photos here and on our web site would be non-existent. Thank you!

Thank you Thommy Rhett for your continued support. Years and years you have delivered fruit to our kitchen door to be served on Saturday mornings. Now, we thank you for the apple sauce and celery. You set a beautiful example.

Special thanks to Arin Coyle and Omar Dominguez for making sure chicken noodle soup and tuna get to us despite the miles between us. They live in Wrightwood and Santa Ana respectively.

Night of Swing Recap

by Ray Castellani

January 23 Year 200 was a beautiful and most heartwarming experience Frontline has ever had - My hope was to bring people together from all walks of life in one room with one sole purpose - that was to enhance the betterment of mankind -

It became a reality for over 400 people showed up - the energy in the room was electrifying to say the least - The Glen Roberts Band was resounding - Frazier Smith on - the food exquisite - the service at the Sheraton most superb-

All I spoke with wanted to do it again - So yes on January 21, 2001 Frontline will do it again - advance reservations have already been set forth even before our first announcement - Same place - Sheraton Universal - 5:30 on a Sunday for cocktails and at 6:30 the doors will open with Glen Roberts - Dinner at about 7:00 and at 8:00 our petite floor show with our prizes and hosts - I would love to see 500 people milling around with the energy of hope for our world to be a better place for humanity to reside - It is and was an honor for me to host Swing Night - A privilege for me to be a part of Frontline - This year coming up I will not sit at a table but rather devote my total energy to meet all the people - I thank all the sponsors - all of the people who came and the Sheraton Universal - And I thank God for using me as an instrument to fulfill His Will in some small way - We also raised over $10,000 after expenses - A real bonus - Thank you dear people - Please try and make it January 21st for Swing 2001’

The Power of Today’s Youth!

Canned food drives - volunteers - chefs - they are everywhere!

Sparks Elementary School collected over 250 cans of tuna recently, and Sandra and Renee McCray continue to head up tuna drives at Noble Avenue Elementary and Fairfield Avenue Elementary. Here student councils and teacher involvement motivate the students.

Castlemont School in Woodland Hills held it’s fourth sandwich making day. Thanks to Marty Nislick, 900 students each made one sandwich, bagged it and then added fruit and drinks that the parents so generously donated. The sacks were delivered after school.

Valley Beth Shalom held their annual food drives bringing in tons of tuna in fall and tons of peanut butter and jelly in the spring. Their support extends from the littlest kindergartner to the 6th graders, to the administrators, teachers and parents. Special thanks Orly Zvi for delivering the food on Saturday mornings.

Archer School for Girls has volunteered twice so far this year. With teacher advisers Ms. Morris and Ms. Valaderes the young women come to the kitchen, prepare cookie dough and bake cookies. According to Frontline’s founder Castellani, "These powerful young women did a fine job - They made the cookies with efficiency with love and with care."

Brownie Troop #464 in Granada Hills has continued their annual holiday tradition. Each year elementary school age girls bake goodies, bag them with holiday decor and then bring them to their Friday afternoon meeting at Vintage Magnet.

These young people provide such an example for our society. With no expectations of rehabilitating people, no demands placed, no judgements on who they serve, these young people truly do give for the purity of giving.

A Night of Humbling

by Noreen Castellani

Night of Swing was certainly an unbelievable evening. All afternoon I couldn’t deter my thoughts from how far Frontline had come. I kept thinking of the spaghetti dinner in 1988 when Ray and his son Raymond Jr. cooked spaghetti and meatballs in a basement church kitchen. Paper napkins, paper plates, plastic cups - I had been so involved in making these events what they were.

For me, I’ve grown up in Frontline. Rather, Frontline has grown me up. Being on the streets with Ray is probably the most exciting thing I can say I’ve experienced in my life. It taught me patience (which I certainly haven’t come close to mastering!), it taught me the power of love and a smile, it humbled me, and it taught me how to "be". Whether good or bad, I really do owe all that I am to Frontline.

But, I’ve had great difficulty growing into the area where Frontline is now. It’s hard for me to leave the picnics, the dinners, the days at the races. In truth, I can’t say that I did very much in the planning of the Night of Swing. Sure I reluctantly printed flyer after flyer (they had to be updated daily to highlight new sponsors). And yes, I made some calls to get prizes donated. But, Ray was the one who did everything - literally. He was the one who got the majority of the 430 people to attend. To think of how little I did was really humbling, even more so when that night so many came up and complimented me on having put together this event. I have to say, as much as I was honored to be in the presence of this event and to see the growth of Frontline, I was kind of ashamed at what little I did to promote the evening. I was a "Doubting Thomas" - an unbeliever. Maybe not aloud, but certainly my actions, or lack of, indicated this. Never in my wildest imagination would the night have turned out the way it did. Maybe I was miffed that Ray had gone out and made the room reservation on a whim without consulting me. Or maybe it was because I was envious that I didn’t have the vision of the night like Ray did. Though had Ray brought it up to me before doing it, me and my "little" mind probably would have been a discourager instead of an encourager.

I often forget that Ray started Frontline with no plans at all. He had a vision, a calling, and he just followed it. He didn’t apply for grants, ask people’s opinions. He didn’t make plans of when he would do it, or try to determine if it was viable to do it. Like Nike ads say, he just did it.

And like the implementation of his calling, he acted similarly in planning the Night of Swing. The evening was unbelievable. I was so proud to be a part of it all - so in awe of what could become from one man’s inspiration. How I wish I had his trust - his belief in God’s directions - the clarity with which to see them - and the strength to act upon them.

I may have grown up a lot in Frontline, and been witness to innumerable miracles of life, faith, and love. But, this Night of Swing thing humbled me enough to realize I do still have so much to learn from Frontline and Ray.

Needless to say, the day after the event when Ray made a reservation for January 21, 2001, I was humbled enough to keep my mouth closed and my heart supportive for I had grown up just a bit more that night and developed a bit more faith.

Dear Danny,

The horror of what happened to you dear friend will last what lifetime I have left - You have given me the best tribute a person can give

another - that is you wanted the principles of which I live by to prevail in your being - For the better part of 15 years you listened and executed these principles with a passion - You became a man among men - You lived your life - found your way to peace of mind - and a God that guided you -

On December 17th of 1999 you and I talked on the phone from California to Tennessee as we did many times these past 4 years - We spoke of how happy you were - of how you found a lady friend who you cared about - We talked about God and how when I met Him - I would let Him know a thing or two - and that I would make sure He took care of you - We talked this way for years for I was 17 years older than you - We laughed so much - we cried at times - The spirit of understanding grew - you called me many times to see if all was well - How I remember the moments of revelation when you got the point I was trying to make -

Well, Dear Danny - you have surpassed me in all areas - You dear friend have become the teacher - I am the student - You dear friend are with the Master - all knowing - transcending His knowledge to you - You have a most beautiful light that encompasses your soul - a smile on your face that will last for eternity -

You Dear Danny were born January 10, 1951 and on January 19, 2000 while you were asleep on the couch - fate came - even though I was 3000 miles away - I can feel the bullets enter your body - I have woken up many nights since with this vision - I cry for you dear friend - for I am only a mortal - my only wish is that it was me - Good night Dear Danny - We will meet soon and walk the path with God as eternity embraces our souls -

Who Wants To Eat?

By Tex

On Tuesday or Saturday mornings hundreds of people line up on Crocker and 5th because they know Ray and Tex will be there rain or shine. There are hot meals and some kind of love. It’s a part of town where some doomed and hungry people are - in the heart of Skid Row. He doesn’t try to change people. He just feeds them and talks to people unlike most people who come down - they feed and as soon as they get through they leave - never trying to share a pleasant thought or get to know you. And, that’s one of the most important things about Ray - he cares. Sometimes we talk and he feels he is not doing enough. He is always thinking of something better and believe me, he has come a long way from 110 to 650,000 today. To me that is doing it. And, that’s the real difference between him and them. Every time he’s down here he has something. If it’s a hot day he has cold water and if it’s cold he has something hot. He has a good operation going. He is for the hungry people. I wish there were more people like him. He realizes that the important thing is not the depth of his pocket but the depth of his love. Having that fruitful relationship is about realizing that the most important thing he can give you is love, respect, honesty and his dedication.

If you are unable to attend but would still like to support and/or participate, we invite you to help sponsor the event. Sponsors are recognized in all press releases, flyers, and invitations, and are highlighted on our web site.
